2014.01: The Ivory Flute

Happy New Year, folks. Well, 2013 was a bust as far as this project goes, but I’m gonna try it again this year! Honestly, I’ll be happy if I can beat last year’s number. It shouldn’t be too hard. Ha!

So the first tune of 2014 is a jig called The Ivory Flute. I learned it at a workshop led by Kevin Crawford (who is awesome – go visit his site) a couple of months ago. It’s pretty much been “my jam” since then.

Catching Up…Week Eighteen: Tomin O’Dea’s

Here’s the second tune I learned from Sean Gavin at the Baltimore Irish Trad Festival this past April: Tomin O’Dea’s Reel.

Catching Up…Week Seventeen: Paddy Clancy’s

Way back in April, exactly 3 months ago today, I had the pleasure of once again attending the Baltimore Irish Trad Festival. I took a flute workshop taught by Sean Gavin, who taught us this jig and the reel I’ll be posting next. Anyway, he called this jig “Biddie McGee’s”, tho’ it seems most folks (and all the sources I’ve seen online) call it Paddy Clancy’s.

And here it is:

Catching Up…Week Sixteen: Jessica’s Polka

Continuing to catch up on my videos with Jessica’s Polka, a tune that would be super simple if only I had a G# key. Sometimes a keyless flute can be a real pain. *shakes fist* Damn you, G#!

Here’s the video!

Catching Up…Week Fifteen: Sailor’s Bonnet

Hello all.

Sorry for the extended hiatus. This hasn’t exactly been the greatest year ever. In any event, I’ve been learning tunes as planned, if not making/posting my weekly videos. I’m going to play catch up over the next month (or so), so be prepared for multi-posts! Woo!

Here’s week fifteen’s tune, the final tune of the Tarbolton Set, Sailor’s Bonnet.

Week Fourteen: The Longford Collector

Here’s week’s fourteen’s tune, two days late, partly because I’ve had a bad week, partly because our internet service is crap & it takes forever for videos to upload to YouTube. It’s the second reel in the Tarbolton Set, The Longford Collector. Next week I’ll do the final tune in the set: Sailor’s Bonnet.

Here it is:

Week Thirteen: The Tarbolton

Hi gang! Starting with this week’s tune, I’m going to learn the three reels that make up The Tarbolton Set: The Tarbolton, The Longford Collector, and Sailor’s Bonnet.

I’ll kick it off with tune number one: The Tarbolton.

Week Twelve: Cup of Tea

Another week brings another reel. This week’s tune is Cup of Tea. I only play it through once because it’s crazy long, especially when played as slowly as I play it. I just couldn’t quite get this tune completely down in a week, but I’ll keep working on it. I’m pretty close, anyway.

Oh, here’s the video:

Week Eleven: Crowley’s Reel

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, folks! I’ve gone back to my ever-growing list of tunes I need to learn for this week’s tune: Crowley’s Reel. For a reference, I used a recording I made at our local Monday night slow(ish) session last October. Enjoy!

Week Ten: The Horse’s Leotard

It never fails. I play the tune all day, and I play it pretty well. However, as soon as I turn the camera on, I completely lose any control I have over the instrument. I’m still hoping that my “camera panic” eases up as I continue this project. So far, it’s not.

So, this week’s tune is a jig called The Horse’s Leotard. I think this will be my last “tune with critters in the title,” but since I haven’t picked out the next tune yet… we’ll see! I learned this tune from a recording I made of Kathleen Coneely in a workshop I took at last year’s Baltimore Irish Trad Fest. If you’re in the area during the weekend of April 26th, and you like Irish trad music, you should definitely check out this year’s fest! Click here for more info.

Oh, yeah, the video. Here it is.
